Terms of Use

Last updated: 26 August 2026

These terms apply when you download and use Classly. By installing the app you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not install it.

What Classly is

Classly is a desktop application for macOS. It records a lesson through your computer's microphone, produces a live transcript, writes notes as the lesson runs, and shows short answers when it detects a question. It runs on your own machine using your own API keys.

Classly is provided free of charge in its current form. No payment is required and no subscription is active.

You must have permission to record

Before you record a lesson, you must obtain the consent of the teacher and of anyone else who can be heard.

Recording a non-public conversation without consent is a criminal offence in Switzerland under Article 179ter of the Swiss Criminal Code, and is restricted or prohibited in many other jurisdictions. You alone are responsible for obtaining that permission and for complying with the law and with the rules of your school.

You also agree not to publish, share or distribute a recording, transcript or note produced with Classly without the consent of the people recorded.

Not for exams

Classly is a study and note-taking tool. Do not use it during an examination, an assessment, an admission test, a job interview, or in any other situation where outside assistance is not permitted. Doing so may breach your school's rules and is outside the intended use of this software.

We give you no assurance that using Classly complies with the rules of your school, your employer or any examination body. Check before you use it.

Your own accounts with third parties

Classly needs a Deepgram API key and an Anthropic API key, which you create and pay for yourself. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms, and any charges they raise are yours. We have no access to your accounts, no control over their availability or pricing, and no responsibility for what they do with the data you send them.

The app is unsigned

Classly is not distributed through the App Store and carries no Apple developer signature. macOS will warn you the first time you open it. You choose whether to proceed. Only download Classly from classly.us or from our official GitHub release page; we cannot vouch for a copy obtained anywhere else.

No warranty

Classly is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. In particular we do not promise that:

Answers are generated automatically and can be wrong. Do not rely on them as a source of truth, and do not use them as a substitute for learning the material.

Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by Swiss law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of Classly, including lost recordings, missed content, inaccurate answers, academic consequences or third-party charges.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for intent or gross negligence, which cannot be excluded under Article 100 of the Swiss Code of Obligations, nor any other liability that the law does not allow to be excluded.

Your responsibility

You agree to hold us harmless from claims raised by a third party that arise from your use of Classly, in particular claims relating to a recording made without consent.

Intellectual property

Classly, its source code, its name and its design remain ours. You may install and use the app. You may not resell it, redistribute a modified version, or reverse engineer it except where the law expressly permits.

What you produce with Classly — your recordings, transcripts and notes — belongs to you. We claim no right over it and, since it never reaches us, we hold no copy of it.

Changes and availability

We may change these terms, change the app, or stop offering it at any time. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised. A version already installed on your computer keeps working; we simply give no assurance that it will keep working forever, since it depends on outside services.

Applicable law and jurisdiction

These terms are governed by Swiss law. The place of jurisdiction is Switzerland, to the extent that a mandatory legal provision does not require otherwise.
